The 6 decisions that shape your season

Get these right and most other things fall into place.

1. Length of stay

1 month? 3? Full season? Cost per day drops as you go longer. 4-month stays usually make the best memories.

2. Visa

90-day tourist for many passports. Japan Digital Nomad Visa (6 months) for some. Working Holiday Visa if you want to work seasonal jobs.

3. Where to base

Hirafu = walk to lifts, premium price, tourist strip. Kutchan = drive to lifts, lower cost, real local town. Niseko Nomads = Kutchan, with car access.

4. When to come

Avoid Christmas + Lunar New Year for value. Mid-Jan to mid-Feb = best snow. Late Mar / April = empty mountains, lower prices.

5. Lift pass

Niseko United All Mountain. Day pass, weekly, monthly, seasonal. Buy seasonal if you're staying 2+ months.

6. Community / friends

Solo stays are lonelier than they look. Coliving solves it on day one.

Pre-arrival checklist

What to handle before flying out.

  • Confirmed accommodation for full duration (no week-to-week scrambling)
  • Visa or visa-free status sorted
  • Travel insurance with snow-sport coverage
  • Pocket Wi-Fi or Japanese SIM ordered (or coliving Wi-Fi confirmed)
  • Cash + Wise/Revolut card for JPY
  • Skis/board: ship ahead OR plan rental on arrival
  • Layers, base layers, gloves — Niseko gets to -15°C
  • If working remotely: laptop, headphones, calendar set to JST

Money rules of thumb

  • Total monthly budget: $3,900 budget / $5,800 mid / $11,600+ premium.
  • Bring more JPY than you think — many izakayas are still cash-only.
  • Lift passes get cheaper the longer the duration you buy. Season pass beats monthly × 4.
  • Cook to save — Niseko restaurants are great but expensive. A kitchen pays for itself.

Yes — fibre internet at Niseko Nomads, plus the Japan Digital Nomad Visa (launched 2024) extends stays up to 6 months for eligible nationalities.
